chainstitch embroidery

My fascination with chainstitch embroidery grew out of my appreciation for vintage western wear. The great western tailors of the past; Nudie, Nathan Turk and Rodeo Ben, just to name a few, used chainstitch embroidery extensively in their work. Today many designers are re-discovering chainstitch embroidery machines. Several years ago I bought my first chainstitch embroidery machine, a 1960's Singer 114w103. A few months later I bought a very rare circa 1913 Singer 114w100 which I found on Craigslist for a mere $30! My most recent chainstitch embroidery machine is a French made Cornely K which dates to the 1890's and still works beautifully; a testament to the quality and engineering of the late 19th century.

I primarily use my machines on my custom western wear pieces, but occasionally accept select custom embroidery jobs. I also moderate a chainstitch embroidery machine resource group. Please contact me if you would like more information regarding these amazing machines.

  1. Hello,

I really like the look of chain stitch embroidery. Would you be able to chain stitch a signature onto some acrylic beanies, like those made by Wear-a-knit? I haven't ordered them yet, but if you are able to add the embellishment to them, I plan on ordering 36 of them.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Jamaal

  5. Hi,

Fabulous work! I would be interested in your chainstitch resource group (if it is still active). I am a hand, machine, and digital embroiderer who dreams of owning a chenille embroidery (but I'll settle for a Cornely).

    Thanks,
    C Nest

  6. Love, love, love these! I used to cross-stitch, but it started to bother my wrist. Probably too many hours at a keyboard followed by too many hours holding a hoop. Oh pain be darned, I might have to start again!

  9. Jerry,

I am looking into getting some patches made with just a few initials. So I can sew them on some hats and shirts for my plumbing company. I was thinking of having just the initials of the company and possibly my name on a couple more, in the script style lettering. Who or where do you recommend I look to get this done?

    Thanks in advance.
